One of the most widely used business envelopes, DL envelopes originated in 1920s Germany where they were known as DIN Lang. The term DL is now more commonly understood as an abbreviation of ‘dimension lengthwise’. With an International Standard size of 110mm x 220mm, or one-third the size of A4, DL envelopes are primarily used for promotional materials such as brochures and flyers, as well as invitations, cards and business mail.
Within this range you have a choice to make, should you use window faced or plain faced envelopes?
Be transparent
Window faced envelopes come with a hole cut into the front that allows the contents – usually the recipient’s address – to be seen. The ‘window’ is made from a transparent material, such as plastic or cellophane. Discovering a window faced envelope in your mailbox has an official feel to it, and they are often used for documents including bills, invoices and business correspondence, for example a formal job offer, or a reminder from your favourite magazine that your subscription is about to expire. Window faced envelopes save time when addressing mail, as they utitilse the address typed on the correspondence itself, folded so that it faces out. This can be especially useful for large mail outs.
Keep it simple
Plain faced envelopes conceal their contents entirely, and allow you to type or handwrite addresses. They are ideal for personal correspondence, invitations, greeting cards and Direct Marketing campaigns where a handwritten address adds a personal touch. So whether it’s a custom made birthday invitation, a letter from your nan, or a personalised flyer drop for your new home business, plain faced DL envelopes are the perfect vessel.
